Age Appropriate Skill Charts

Ever wondered at what age your players should be able to accomplish certain skills?

All kids develop at different rates. USA has adopted these Skill Development Charts to assist coaches and players as to the appropriate skills to work on at the appropriate age.  Coaches should use these skill charts to plan their practices. They can also be use to evaluate your teams and/or players development. These findings are based on over ten years of study in youth soccer by the University of North Carolina under the direction of Gary Brosz.   We have refined them a bit and broken the skills down into more digestible chunks of information.

You can select charts for your age group, which includes every skill component or you may select the entire skill chart and see at what ages these skills will probably (or should be) developed.

How to use the charts:

  1. "Intro/Con" means the coach should be introducing skill.

  2. "Dev" means the player should understand the skill concept and should be  working towards developing the skill.

  3. "Percentage (%) means the player is attempting to master the skill, they can do the skill but are learning the 'how'—under what game conditions is the skill appropriate—and the 'when'—the time element—of the skill in game situations.

  4. "Proficient"  means the player is able to use the skill successfully in game situations.

Be Warned: The pages are very long and the by Skill pages are quite wide! These pages may take a minute to open.
